What's a pseudo set?

A pseudo set is a full-length exam built from an original set. Every question tests a similar concept as its original, with a tweak, so you can test yourself if you learned from your last mistake.

New numbers

Same problem structure, fresh values. The sample's 314 sq. in circle becomes a 154 sq. in circle, so you rework the method instead of recalling an answer.

Complementary information

The same setup read from the other side. The square inside the circle becomes a circle inside the square, so the diameter now matches the side, not the diagonal.

A related concept

A neighboring idea from the same NCEES® topic, like the area left between the circle and the square, so the whole topic sticks, not just one question.

An original question and its pseudo twin

Question 1.1 from our sample set, and its pseudo twin with the geometry flipped, with every solution section exactly as you see it when reviewing your exam.

ORIGINAL · SAMPLE QNS · Q1.1Mathematics › Analytic geometry

What is most nearly the area of the square circumscribed by a circle of area 314 sq. in?

  • (A) 150 sq. in
  • (B) 200 sq. in✓
  • (C) 250 sq. in
  • (D) 350 sq. in

Bare-bones solution

r = √(314 / π) = 10 in
diagonal d = 2r = 20 in
A = d2 / 2 = 400 / 2 = 200 sq. in
Answer: (B) 200 sq. in

References

Common formulas (area of a circle, area of a square, Pythagorean theorem); not necessarily given in the NCEES® Handbook.

Detailed solution

Step 1 · Read the geometry. The square sits inside the circle with its corners on it, so the square's diagonal equals the circle's diameter.
Step 2 · Radius. A = πr2 gives r = √(314 / π) = 10 in, so the diagonal is 2r = 20 in.
Step 3 · Side from Pythagoras. s2 + s2 = 202, so s2 = 400 / 2 = 200. The area is s2 = 200 sq. in.
Sanity check: a square inside a circle covers 2/π ≈ 64% of it, and 0.64 × 314 ≈ 200.

What if I were to guess?

Two options can go without any calculation at all.
  1. The square sits completely inside the circle, so its area must be less than 314. Cross out (D) 350 sq. in.
  2. Fold the four circle segments outside the square in across its sides (dotted arcs below). They don't fill the square, so the square is more than half the circle (314 / 2 = 157). Cross out (A) 150 sq. in.
That leaves (B) or (C), a 50/50 guess without any calculation.

Distractor analysis

(A) 150 sq. in roughly halves the circle's area (314 / 2 ≈ 157).
(C) 250 sq. in overestimates how much of the circle the square fills.
(D) 350 sq. in is larger than the circle itself, which is impossible for a square drawn inside it.
PSEUDO · SAMPLE QNS · Q1.1Mathematics › Analytic geometry

A circle of area 154 sq. in is inscribed in a square. What is most nearly the area of the square?

  • (A) 98 sq. in
  • (B) 154 sq. in
  • (C) 196 sq. in✓
  • (D) 308 sq. in

Bare-bones solution

r = √(154 / π) = 7 in
side = 2r = 14 in
A = s2 = 142 = 196 sq. in
Answer: (C) 196 sq. in

References

Common formulas (area of a circle, area of a square, Pythagorean theorem); not necessarily given in the NCEES® Handbook.

Detailed solution

Step 1 · Read the geometry. The circle sits inside the square and touches all four sides, so the square's side equals the circle's diameter.
Step 2 · Radius. A = πr2 gives r = √(154 / π) = 7.0 in, so the diameter is 2r = 14 in.
Step 3 · Square area. s = 14 in, so A = s2 = 196 sq. in.
Sanity check: a circle inside a square covers π/4 ≈ 79% of it, and 154 / 0.785 ≈ 196.

What if I were to guess?

Three options can go without any calculation at all.
  1. The circle sits completely inside the square, so the square's area must be more than 154. Cross out (A) 98 sq. in and (B) 154 sq. in.
  2. Fold the four corners outside the circle in across the lines joining the points where it touches the square (dotted lines below). They fit inside the circle with room to spare, so the square is less than twice the circle (2 × 154 = 308), and D sits right on that limit. Cross out (D) 308 sq. in.
Only (C) 196 sq. in is left.

Distractor analysis

(A) 98 sq. in treats the diameter as the square's diagonal (14² / 2), which only holds when the square is inside the circle.
(B) 154 sq. in sets the square's area equal to the circle's.
(D) 308 sq. in doubles the circle's area. It is the upper bound from folding the corners in, not the answer.
